Which Way Should Solar Panels Face?

Orientation, pitch and why the way Wolverhampton streets were laid out has already decided most of it for you.

South is the textbook answer

In the northern hemisphere the sun tracks across the southern sky, so a roof slope facing due south sees it for longest and at the best angle. That is the reason south gets quoted as the ideal, and it is not wrong.

It is just rarely the question homeowners are actually asking. Almost nobody gets to choose. The roof faces whichever way the builder pointed it, and the real question is whether what you have is good enough — which, across most of Wolverhampton, it is.

Your street decided this, not you

Wolverhampton's housing tells you a lot before anyone climbs a ladder. The interwar and post-war semis that make up so much of Penn, Wednesfield, Bilston and Willenhall were built in long parallel runs with the ridge following the road. That means the two slopes face opposite each other and the pair of them is fixed by the compass bearing of the street — so on one side of the road the front elevation catches the sun and on the other side it is the back garden slope that does.

The same logic applies to the Victorian terraces closer to the centre, and it is why two neighbours can get quite different array designs on visually identical houses. The larger detached and semi-detached stock around Tettenhall and Codsall breaks the pattern more often, with hipped roofs and dormers giving several smaller slopes at different bearings rather than two large ones.

East and west are perfectly workable

A slope facing east or west generates less over a year than the same slope facing south. It still generates a great deal, and for a household that is out during the middle of the day it can suit the pattern of use better — morning and evening output lands closer to when the kettle, the oven and the car charger are actually being used.

North is the one to think hard about

A due north slope is the genuine exception. It is not that panels there produce nothing, but the return on the same hardware and the same scaffolding is poor enough that most installers will steer you towards a smaller array on a better slope instead. If north is all your roof offers, it is worth having the conversation about ground mounting or a garage roof before dismissing solar altogether.

Pitch matters, but less than orientation

The angle of the slope is the second variable, and it is a gentler one. Most UK domestic roof pitches sit within a range that works well for solar, so a roof that is a little shallow or a little steep is usually a footnote in the design rather than a problem.

Local housing stock does vary here. The older slate roofs on Victorian property around the city tend to be steeper than the concrete interlocking tile on post-war estates, and very shallow pitches bring their own considerations — chiefly that rain is less effective at washing the glass, so soiling builds up more readily. Flat roofs are a different case again, because the mounting frame sets the angle and orientation rather than the building.

What actually decides it on your house

Orientation is one input among several. Shading from a chimney, a neighbouring gable or a mature tree can matter more than a bearing being twenty degrees off south — that is dealt with in solar panels and shading. So can the usable area once vents, hips and dormers are worked around.

Is a south-west or south-east roof much worse than due south?
No. A bearing somewhere between south-east and south-west is close enough to ideal that the difference is minor, and it is a very common situation on Wolverhampton estates.
